When they stepped through the entrance to Avalon, Forrest’s mom was in awe. The portal with its tall crystal monolith stood on the golden platform. It was a sight to behold.

“If you stay here, I’ll bring back Leirida to help carry you to the town, it’s a rather long walk, by foot,” Yuri said and quickly took flight.

“I thought you might be interested in seeing the writing around the portal. See all these archaic designs?” Forrest said, pointing out to the figures that circled the parameter of the portal.

“What does it all mean?” Forrest mom asked, tracing a symbol with one fingertip.

“Much of the writing was written long ago by Zelspar himself. Even though I have been trained in reading the writings of Dragons, Zelspar has a secret language used only by the royal house of his Hail. Before finding Zelspar, we had to unlock the secrets of his writing to find him.” Forrest had been looking at the symbols as he explained and when he looked up, he saw his mom’s complete amazement.

“I’m sorry mom; I know this all sounds so confusing, catching only pieces of the story. I hope we will have time to tell stories around the fireside, sometime soon. I think you would be astounded.”

They looked up to see two Dragons airborne, a sight which still excited Forrest and he could quickly tell, took his mother’s breath away. The Dragons landed a few feet away and walked toward them.

“Hi, I’m Leirida,” Yuri’s friend said, holding out her hand as she gazed at Forrest’s mom.

“You are beautiful,” the words fell from Forrest’s mother’s lips. “My name is Clara; I’m Forrest’s mom.” Clara reached over and placed her hand into Leirida’s, noting how small her hand seemed in comparison.

“There is nothing to fear, to ride on a Dragon. Clara, would you be my rider?” Leirida asked.

“I would be ecstatic to be your rider,” she said as her eyes sparkled. She had never imagined having this opportunity and until recently would never have believed the many myths and legends had credence in the natural world. But, here before her, a speaking Dragon on the island of Avalon. She shook her head in amazement.

“Mom, when she lowers herself, I’ll help you up. Just slide between her shoulders and the spikes, there is plenty of room and hold onto the rope she’s got running up by her neck.” Forrest gave her instructions as he fussed about, getting her situated. “Are you all set, mom?”

“Oh, yes,” Clara answered, her smile splitting the sky.

Forrest climbed up on Yuri, and they launched off first to give Clara an idea of what to expect. Leirida looked over her shoulder and said, “Hold on, we’re next.”

Leirida left the ground as gently as a bird; her beautiful wings swished softly through the air. When she spun her head around to check on Clara, all she saw was a face of wonderment. A delicate twitter sounded in her throat.

Forrest called out, “Mom, look!”

His mother looked in the direction he pointed and was shocked at the sight.
